Ako imate vremena i volje, prošećite jedan dan.
Saturday was the only rain- free day and it was a non- working day, and I decided to spend it outside in the nature. since Zagreb has a zoo, and I haven't been there for a decade, we went to see how it looks now, in 2016.
First of all, while S and i were walking along towards the entrance, one heron flew and stopped to say hi. Heron was polite enough to turn all of its profiles so I can take (many) pictures, but then the second one came, and then the third and the forth. First we thought it was the same two birds flying with us, but no, they all stand there looking at us, while two us entered the zoo.
My opinion on zoo is divided. Last time i was there it almost broke my heart seeing the bears and other big animals placed in such small spaces, they looked catatonic.
On the other hand, thing are changing, for the better. I am also aware places like zoos are the ones where endangered species are saved. I just hope their living conditions would improve.
Zagreb Zoo has improved since my last visit ten years ago. I read some info how they got a good amount of money through the European funds and some places were work in progress while I was there on Saturday, Because some parts of the zoo were a reconstruction area, we didn't see all the species: wolfs, bears, eagles, zebras..but everything else was quit good.
Today zoo is more adapted to people with baby carriage and wheelchairs, allowing them to come and visit and enjoy, too. It is more child- oriented with information about animals that are children appropriate.
First that caught my attention was the Nile hippo. There was a notice saying that it is their mating season, and since they are big and having and not too gentle while trying to mate, they hurt their skin. It is perfectly natural. While I was reading that, one hippo came and eat all the feces from the floor.
I don't know whether it is some part of their hormone thing while mating, a natural thing they do, or some kind of a hippo performance while visitors look at them.
There is a part called Baby zoo, where some young animals spend their time, and you an pet them. It is fantastic for the children, especially those who don't have such opportunities at home. I saw baby goat, baby pig and a lamb there. and one bigger goat, sitting on the top of a wood, where he just sat, relax and chewed his food. People and children would come to pet him and take pictures with him, and he tolerated it all, expect some guy who decided to take selfie with a goat, and put his smartphone right into his face. well, the goat didn't like it,
But later we came and he was thrilled :D to see us, and you can see his happiness on the pictures above.
The next species that caught my eye were the camels, Asian camels. I didn't know camels are so huge. Zagreb zoo has one male and two females, and they were not interested in hanging out with people till the moment they saw their guard coming with food. They saw him well before the visitors has seen him, and they hurried to the fence and stood there waiting for him. When he came, they turned into three petting balls (huge balls) and they acted like some pets, while he was petting them and feeding them.
Snakes are situated in a separate house, together with some tropical fish and a Nile crocodile (not all together, of course). I like snakes, I find them interesting. The ones that were in the zoo, however, were impressive, large and dangerous. There was some kind of a reptile (not really a reptile) that was standing still in the water, only half of the head above the water. The reptile was so still, I was sure it is a toy, and I convinced everyone around me it was a toy. But then the toy blinked his eyes, moved and looked at me, as if he understood what I was saying. Now everyone around me had to tell me I was wrong. That was a bonding moment: me, some Slovenians, some Croats and the reptile.
Among other animals, there were many warning signs about animal babies, where visitors were kindly asked to be quiet or not to come to close.
A part of the zoo is in renovation at the moment, and I hope it will allow animals bigger spaces and better life conditions.
